Avoided Band Crossings: Tuning Metal-Insulator Transitions in Chaotic Systems

چکیده
We show that avoided crossings of energy bands may give rise to a variety of phenomena such as transitions from metal to insulator and vice versa, changes in localization lengths, and changes in the fractal dimension of energy spectra. We explain the occurrence of these phenomena in the kicked Harper model under classically chaotic conditions and predict them to occur in other systems. [S0031-9007(97)04836-9]

Quantum Chaos and Spectral Transitions in the Kicked Harper Model
In contrast to bounded systems, quantum chaos in extended systems may be associated with fractal spectra, metal-insulator transitions due to avoided band crossings, and spreading wave packets. In this lecture we point out the role of avoided band crossings for spectral transitions in the example of the kicked Harper model. We explain the coexistence of localized and extended eigenfunctions oo t...
متن کاملN ov 1 99 6 The Generalized Gutzwiller Method for n ≥ 2 Correlated Bands : First Order Metal - Insulator Transitions
We have generalized the Gutzwiller method to the cases of n ≥ 2 correlated bands and report studies on a degenerate two-band model with Hund's rule type on-site interactions. At half band filling the metal-insulator transitions are usually of first order.
متن کاملNon–Adiabatic Transitions near Avoided Crossings: Theory and Numerics
We present a review of rigorous mathematical results about non– adiabatic transitions in molecular systems that are associated with avoided crossings of electron energy level surfaces. We then present a novel numerical technique for studying these transitions that is based on expansions in semiclassical wavepackets.
متن کاملAvoided level crossings in the quantization of a mixed regular-chaotic system.
Quantum chaos entails the investigation of the quantization of classical Hamiltonian systems with chaotic dynamics. It is particularly interesting to consider the quantization of systems with mixed regular integrable and chaotic dynamics, as typical classical Hamiltonian systems possess mixed dynamics, with islands of integrability situated in a chaotic sea. One particularly appealing example c...
متن کاملMetallic and insulating states in two-dimensional C60-polymers
Variations in the band structures of the two-dimensional C60-polymers are studied, when π-conjugation conditions are changed. We investigate the rectangular and triangular polymers, in order to discuss metal-insulator transitions, using a semiempirical model with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type electronphonon interactions. We find that electronic structures change among directgap insulators and t...
